The Lagos State House of Assembly, has, as a matter of urgency, called on the Senate and the House of Representatives to commence an amendment of the Constitution of Nigeria to accommodate State Police.
This call came as the House expressed concerns over recent cases of security threats in the country.
They suggested the need to unburden the Nigeria Police Force by paving the way for States to create their security outfits according to their financial capacity.
It would be recalled that the House of Assembly established a uniformed security agency, the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) to assist the Police in tackling crimes in Lagos State.
The House called on the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu to ensure the absorption of newly recruited Safety personnel and provide them with equipments in order for the Agency to perform its duties effectively.
The House resolved to amend the Security Trust Fund Law by ensuring that certain percentage of the State’s Security Trust Fund goes to the LNSC in order to strengthen and empower the Agency.
The House further resolved that there was need to consider the factors responsible for insecurities, crimes and ensure a form of relief for the people to ameliorate the hardship due to the recent inflation faced in the State.
Contributing, Aro Moshood expressed dismay over the recent kidnapping that happened in his constituency, Ijede area of Ikorodu where kidnappers invaded the community and abducted a number of people.
The local vigilantes were able to rescue some while two vigilantes lost their lives and four others sustained injury.
Describing the issue as a pathetic one, Hon. Aro urged the government to put a perfect structure in place to accommodate State Police and also equip the local security with modern technologies in order to protect the community.
The Speaker thereafter directed the Clerk of the House, Barr. Olalekan Onafeko, to write a letter to the National Assembly stating the resolve of the House of Assembly on the issue.
