Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for a thorough and impartial investigation into allegations of sexual harassment and intimidation leveled against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. Abubakar emphasized the gravity of these allegations and the necessity for transparency in addressing them.
“These allegations are grave and deserve a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation,” Abubakar stated. He underscored the importance of integrity within the Nigerian Senate, noting that its members, particularly those in leadership positions, must uphold the highest standards of conduct.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has accused Senate President Akpabio of making inappropriate advances during a visit to his residence in Akwa Ibom. She claims that her challenges in the Senate began after she rejected these alleged advances. “Mine is the case of a student being punished by a lecturer for refusing to sleep with him,” Akpoti-Uduaghan remarked during an interview.
In response, Ekaette Akpabio, the wife of the Senate President, has dismissed these allegations, asserting that her husband is a disciplined individual. She accused Akpoti-Uduaghan of fabricating lies against him.
Abubakar highlighted the broader implications of such allegations, pointing out that sexual harassment in the workplace poses a significant barrier to women’s advancement and, by extension, the nation’s progress. He stressed that such misconduct should not be dismissed, especially when it involves high-ranking public officials.
The former Vice President called upon President Bola Tinubu and the Senate to take these allegations seriously by ensuring a credible, transparent, and independent investigation. He emphasized that the handling of this matter would send a strong message about Nigeria’s commitment to justice, accountability, and the inclusion of women in governance.
With only four women currently serving in the Senate, Abubakar underscored the imperative of fostering an environment where female legislators can serve without fear of harassment or intimidation. “This moment demands careful and principled action to uphold the integrity of our institutions and ensure that every Nigerian, regardless of gender, is treated with dignity and respect,” he concluded.
As the situation unfolds, various stakeholders and advocacy groups are closely monitoring the Senate’s response to these serious allegations, which have significant implications for gender equality and the integrity of Nigeria’s legislative body.
