Chairmanship Aspirants in the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Agege can now contest for the party ticket ahead of the forthcoming local government election without any coercion or subtle threats to step down for the son of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, Abdulganiyu Obasa.
This is because the senior Obasa on Wednesday withdrew his son from the party primary which is underway. Sources close to the Speaker disclosed under anonymity.
Earlier, Obasa senior had reportedly directed all chairmanship aspirants in Agege LG to step down and support his son as the sole candidate for the chairmanship race.

TheWest Newspaper learnt that this latest decision follows a directive from President Bola Tinubu, who is Obasa’s political godfather.
According to those who claimed to be in the know, the withdrawal comes after Speaker Obasa’s meeting with Tinubu in Abuja, where concerns were raised about the potential implications of promoting his son’s candidacy on the party’s unity and public perception in Lagos State.
President Tinubu reportedly advised against any actions that might suggest favouritism or undermine the democratic process within the party.
Prior to this development, Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa had been a prominent contender for the chairmanship position, with support from various party stakeholders and youth groups. Notably, the Agege Youth Vanguard had purchased a ₦5 million nomination form on his behalf, signaling strong grassroots backing.
In response to his son’s withdrawal, Speaker Obasa encouraged all interested APC members in Agege to pursue their political aspirations without hindrance. He has called on those who had previously stepped aside for his son to re-engage in the political process, purchase nomination forms, and actively participate in the upcoming primaries.
It is left to be seen if those who had made a publicity of their stepping down, including the outgoing Vice Chairman, Gbenga Abiola will return to the race.
This development however has reshaped the political dynamics in Agege, opening the field to a broader range of aspirants ahead of the local government elections scheduled for July 12, 2025. The APC’s commitment to internal democracy and fair competition remains a focal point as the party navigates this critical electoral period.
