Chief Sunny Kuku, the esteemed Ogbeni Oja, has formally taken on the mantle of Regent Awujale, becoming the highest-ranking traditional figure in the Awujale’s Palace.
This appointment comes as the community prepares for the selection of the next Awujale, following the passing of the late Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.
Chief Kuku, who also holds the titles of Olor’ogun of Ijebu Ode and Asiwaju of the Balogun Kuku Dynasty, is highly regarded for his leadership, cultural acumen, and extensive contributions to the community.
His new role as Regent Awujale underscores his importance in Ijebuland’s traditional hierarchy.
Dr. Sunny Kuku is not only a respected traditional leader but also a distinguished medical professional. He is a co-founder of The EKO Hospitals and has held several prestigious positions, including Chairman of Ecobank Nigeria and the Human Capital Policy Commission of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group. His accomplishments in medicine and business have earned him international recognition.
The late Awujale, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who passed away on July 13, 2025, had a transformative 65-year reign. He was known for his dedication to the welfare of his people, fostering educational advancements, healthcare improvements, and economic growth. His contributions to Ijebuland’s cultural heritage, such as the Ojude Oba festival, have left a lasting legacy.
