The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation Afenifere has described the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, CFR, GCON, as an “exemplary monarch whose 62-year reign was marked by integrity, focus and dedication to the people.”
In a statement issued on Monday by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Jare Ajayi, the organisation quoted its 96-year-old leader, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, as saying that the monarch’s life “is worthy of emulation at every stage.”
Oba Adetona, who passed away on Sunday, 13 July 2025 at the age of 91, was crowned on 5 April 1960. According to Afenifere, his conduct upon returning from the United Kingdom, where he studied accountancy, and throughout his tenure on the throne, “set a standard for enlightened leadership.”
“His reign was characterized by wisdom, dexterity, enlightened and admirable leadership style, commitment to Yoruba cause and the national interests”.
Also commending the late Oba’s dedication to our culture and tradition, the statement recalled that his reign brought Ojude-oba celebration not only to limelight “but made it a cynosure of everyone including the international community”.
The statement also recalled the monarch’s patriotic role during the June 12, 1993 election crisis and his efforts in promoting Yoruba culture, noting that the annual Ojude Oba festival “grew into an international attraction” under his watch.
Afenifere extended its condolences to the people of Ijebuland, the Ogun State Government, the Yoruba nation and the entire Nigerian traditional institution, praying that the soul of the late Oba “rests in perfect peace.”
