The Lagos government has denied claims that it has published an updated version of the State Tenancy Law. Some social media handles, especially on popular microblogging sites, -Facebook, X and Whatsapp have been circulating a post purpotedly released by the state government about a revised tenancy law.
The post claims that the revised tenancy law mandates that rent payment in the state should not exceed three months, while stipulating fines of up to N100,000 or three months’ imprisonment on landlords or agents that go against the reviewed law.
The State government has however denied it issued such a review and cautuioned residents against spreading unverified information. Barakat Bakare, special adviser to the Lagos governor on housing, on Saturday said although, the government is considering a review, the syndicated social media post did not emanate from authorised sources, including the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA).
Bakare said in a statement, “However, the bill for a new Tenancy law is under due consideration at the Lagos State House of Assembly and yet to be passed into Law” adding that: “The culture of monthly payment and a clear understanding of the process of real estate transactions at all levels are being discussed at these engagements,” the statement added.
