The Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), says 61 people died while 308 Injured during Ember months accidents in the state.
Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, the Spokesperson of TRACE, disclosed this in a release in Abeokuta on Saturday.
Akinbiyi explained that 26 people died while 84 Injured in various road accidents in September, four died and 60 Injured in October, 18 died, 57 injured in November while 13 died while 101 Injured in December.
The TRACE spokesperson noted that comparing 2023 and 2022 Ember’ period in the state, both road traffic death and
injured person was reduced by 4.69 per cent and 18.16 per cent respectively in 2023.
” The number of
accident cases recorded also sees to a decrease of 17.41 per cent which collaborate of intensify efforts on our advocacy of a safer road for all.
“Motor vehicles contributed to 35 per cent crashes, buses with 11 per cent
, trucks and articulated vehicles contributed a larger percentage of 44 per cent.
” Motorcycle and tricycle contributed to six per cent and one per cent of the total crashes respectively, while pedestrians involvement in road crashes related mishap accounted for three per cent,” he said.
Akinbiyi stated that the most common cause of road traffic crashes in the state remained excessive speeding which could be
attributed to 32 per cent of road traffic crashes.
” Mechanical faults has 13 per cent, driving against traffic/other prohibited directions has 17 per cent , tyre burst, six per cent, dangerous driving and wrongful overtaking, 11 per cent.
” Others are brake failure which has nine per cent while others which contributed 12 per cent
can be attributed to fatigue, weather, failed portions of the roads, driving
under Influence of drugs or alcohol among others,” he said.
Akinbiyi added that it was important to increase the workforce of TRACE in order to enhance effective productivity
while also providing patrol vehicles along the corridors for constant monitoring patrol to reduce accident.
